I had never visited the American Southwest until last June, when work sent me to Fort Huachuca in Arizona.

Great, Arizona in June, this will be awesome.

And it was hot, but at 4800 feet it is quite comfortable, especially compared to Virginia and our high humidity.

The first thing you notice while driving in from Tucson is that thing in the sky. The locals call it the Hector Detector, but it is technically an aerostat. Here on the border it is aimed south and obviously used for surveillance. I took this photo aboard Fort Huachucha.

Here is a link to other photos of the aerostat.

After work was complete I hiked a bit around Fort Huachucha. There are some really nice trails. Unfortunately I had crappy shoes and no water, so IÂ didn’t get very far. But I did get some nice pictures.

I had this feeling that I was being watched all the time. I bet the guys with the aerostat watch all of the idiots that hike without proper equipment (like me) and laugh.

After working up an appetite I headed to an oft overlooked gem – the world’s first McDonald’s Drive Thru.

This historic landmark, along with many other fast food restaurants, are located on Fry Boulevard.

All week long we’ve felt the shock of trees being felled while we write code and test hardware. I guess this is what living in California is like, except we have gun rights.

In fact we’ve knocked over so many trees that we brought in a Hogzilla tub grinder. Here is a video of a Hogzilla in action.

Mike estimates the entire pile of debris can be mulched in a day and a half. Not bad.

There is some grading left to be done. My apologies to any misplaced squirrels. I assume they got the eviction notices.

Here Barbara and John cut the ribbon.

That is a fine collection of Directors, Bosses, and Oldsters. The group is pretty much compromised of employees with single digit Employee IDs. Please note the hat mounted video camera on TJ. I am sure you remember TJ from his previous starring role in TJ Rides Again.

Finally the time came for a toast to our current and future successes.

This project will take about 9 months to complete. Maybe quicker if we can keep the relic hunters off the property.

One of our more outgoing engineers decided that he <strike>could</strike> should ride a horse. I am not sure he has ever ridden a horse before, bareback or otherwise. Regardless, the following is destined to be a classic.

Blogger launched a new toy that provides a way to watch in near real-time all images as they get uploaded to blogspot.com.

Blogger Play will show you a never-ending stream of images that were just uploaded to public Blogger blogs. You can click the image to be taken directly to the blog post it was uploaded to, or click “show info” to see an overlay with the post title, a snippet of the body, and some profile information about the blogger who uploaded it.

A caveat: we use many techniques, including Google’s SafeSearch technology, to keep the images clean. Nevertheless, on rare occasions an image that you may find vulgar or obscene will slip through our algorithmic filters. Google does not pre-screen the images that appear in Blogger Play, nor is it responsible for their content.

Here is the link to the Blogger Play FAQ.

You can easily kill a few hours just watching the images go by. You simply gotta check it out. Admit it…you like to watch.

We all have pet peeves. Those little annoyances that emerge in the environs where we spend the most time. For those poor souls that commute to DC it may be drivers that slow down just to look at a car broken down on the shoulder.

Since I spend a fair amount of time in front of a computer my pet peeves usually originate around internet related annoyances. Below is a short list of some of my internet pet peeves.

Any eBay feedback that contains something like “…blah, blah. A+++++++++++++++++++…”

Email with multiple colored fonts, all sized greater than 36 points

Email forwards that I have to dive 20 layers down to read

Silly Instant Messenger names, e.g. ILoveMyKitties3476

Email that asks you to “forward this to everyone in your address book”

(Most) computer users over the age of 50

Spam, but bacn is tolerable

Web pages that open pop ups when you simply navigate their site

What are some of your pet peeves?

Data visualization was the topic today on Coding Horror. If you haven’t read it then head on over, it’s worth your time.

What peaked my interest was from Websites as Graphs from Aharef. He has written an application that graphs web pages based on tag association. He presents sample graphs of popular websites such as Google, MSN and CNN. He even provides this application to view your own website as a graph. Below is davefarley.org viewed as a graph.

The legend is as follows:

blue: for links (the A tag)
red: for tables (TABLE, TR and TD tags)
green: for the DIV tag
violet: for images (the IMG tag)
yellow: for forms (FORM, INPUT, TEXTAREA, SELECT and OPTION tags)
orange: for linebreaks and blockquotes (BR, P, and BLOCKQUOTE tags)
black: the HTML tag, the root node
gray: all other tags
